Frequently Asked Questions

What is TNR/TNVR?

TNR stands for Trap-Neuter-Return. TNVR stands for Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return. We TNR/TNVR all of our cats weekly as well as receive any additional medical treatment necessary including flea treatment  & an eartip.

Why do we eartip?

An eartip is the universal sign that a cat has been fixed & vaccinated. The eartip signifies the public and animal control that the cat is being responsibly caring for a colony by performing TNR. California eartips the right ear. Other states eartip the left ear. Either way, an eartip stands for the same thing universally.

Why do we '“return” in TNR?

After cats have recuperated from surgery for 24 hours, they are released back into their communities. We return these cats because the outdoors is their home, and the generally help the community as a whole! These cats know their home area & act as a great natural pest control for the neighborhood!

If you do not want feral cats in your yards, there are humane ways to deal with that. Generally it takes 2-4 weeks once we being to TNR the colony to see a significant decrease within the size and noise of the colony.

What is SNR?

SNR stands for shelter-neuter-return. This program brings healthy free-roaming cats to the shelter and are then referred to an established TNR programs when available. This is currently being practiced in San Jose, Berkeley and Long Beach with great success!

What is a feral cat?

A feral (or community cat) is a cat who is not socialized to people and survives on her own outdoors. Most feral cats are not likely to ever become lap cats or enjoy living indoors. Since feral cats are not adoptable, they should not be brought to animal pounds and shelters, because there they will likely be killed.

Feral cats are protected under the state of California’s animal anti-cruelty laws, the California Penal Code Section 597a. A violation of this anti-cruelty laws carries a penalty of at least 1 year in prison and/or a $20,000 fine, plus a felony record if you maim, kill or poison an animal.

What is a stray cat?

A stray cat is a cat who has been socialized to people at some point in their life, but has gotten lost or abandoned by their indoor home, as well as most human contact and dependence. Stray cats can become feral as their contact with humans dwindles.

Stray cats that are re-introduced to a home after living outdoors may require a period of time to re-acclimate, but under the right circumstances become a pets once again!
